ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI
MARCH 29, 2025

St. Louis carries a profound and powerful legacy of Black struggle, resilience, and resistance — a history that resonates deeply with us. That's why KYRC was beyond thrilled to bring our Camp to this city. Our mission in The Lou was more than just a presence; it was a call to action, a passionate commitment to inspire, unite, and empower communities. Together, we stood side by side, working toward the shared goals of justice, strength and transformative change.

Four hundred incredible young people gathered with us for our 14th Camp at the historic Harris-Stowe State University, a beacon of Black excellence. The day was nothing short of transformative, filled with deep learning and powerful fellowship. Tomorrow's leaders were immersed in several inspiring presentations that will stay with them for a lifetime. Civil rights attorney Brandon Jackson and KYRC's own Nicole Martin, director of the Autopsy Initiative Legal Program, enlightened the youth about their legal rights, empowering them with knowledge and confidence. Abolitionist author and lawyer Derecka Purnell took them on a journey through St. Louis' powerful Black history, connecting past struggles to the fight for justice today.

Other incredibly informative presentations included sessions on holistic health, using art as an activism tool, potential careers in technology, finance, and much more. Between lessons, three nutritious meals, and giveaways, these moments served as a testament to our dedication to our mission for collective uplift in Black and Brown communities.

We were also honored to welcome special guests Toni Taylor, the brave mother of Cary Ball Jr., who was tragically taken from us by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department in 2013, and Michael Brown Sr., whose son Michael Brown Jr.'s death by Ferguson police sparked a national movement against police violence in Black communities. Their courage, strength, and voices remind us all of the urgency to fight for justice.

Not enough gratitude and thanks can go to our co-founders Colin & Nessa, KYRC team, volunteers and presenters at KYRC St. Louis: Brandan 'BMike' Odums and Cbabi Boyac (Art), Charli Cooksey (Education), Mykail James (Finance), Derecka Purnell (History), Brandon Jackson & Nicole Martin (Legal Rights),  Etoya R. White  (Physical & Mental Health) and Abran Maldonaldo (Technology).
