Samual Lawrence, a 34-year-old man who died in the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta after he was found unresponsive in his cell. Lawrence is the fourth person to die in the jail within the past month.
Though the jail made recent headlines regarding former President Donald Trump and 18 other people indicted for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia, it’s been under scrutiny in recent months. This includes the death of Lashawn Thompson, who died in a bedbug-infested cell last September where an independent autopsy found that Thompson died from severe neglect. KYRC's Autopsy Initiative was utilized for Thompson’s independent autopsy.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office said that Atlanta police will investigate Lawrence’s death, and the Fulton County medical examiner’s office will do an autopsy to determine the manner and cause of death. The other three people who died in the jail in the past month were Alexander Hawkins, Christopher Smith, and Montay Stinson. The causes of their deaths have not been released.
Problems, including violence, filthy conditions, and overcrowding, have plagued the jail. Another issue with Fulton County is that the jail has been understaffed for years as the Sheriff’s Office has struggled to attract and retain qualified staff.
