Spike Responds To Malcolm X's Family Suing FBI, CIA & NYPD Over His Assassination

At the Red Sea Film Festival, Spike Lee, serving as jury president, shared insights into his experiences and upcoming projects. Displaying his trademark humor, Lee joked about potentially attending Saudi Arabia's 2034 FIFA World Cup. "The key question is whether I'm still alive — I'll be 77 in 2034. But if I'm around, I'll be there!" he quipped.

Lee's connection to Saudi Arabia dates back to 1991, when he sought permission to shoot his Malcolm X biopic in Mecca, marking a historic first for a non-documentary film crew. Reflecting on that legacy, Lee posted on Instagram marking the film's 32nd anniversary: "I suggest you might want to watch this joint epic again, especially after the daughters of Malcolm X have sued the CIA, FBI and NYPD for $100 million for involvement with the assassination of their father."

Lee firmly believes in their culpability. "They're guilty. I showed that in the film," he stated, referencing scenes depicting Malcolm X under surveillance by the CIA and the NYPD's indifference after his assassination.

On future projects, Lee remained characteristically tight-lipped about details, including his reinterpretation of Kurosawa's High and Low. "I'm very superstitious to talk about things until they actually happen," he explained. Instead, he emphasized the importance of letting actions speak louder than plans.
