Former Delaware County police officers Brian Devaney, Sean Dolan, and Devon Smith pled guilty to 10 counts of reckless endangerment in the death of 8-year-old Fanta Bility in August 2021. Their guity pleas to these counts were part of a plea deal between Bility's family and prosecutors, which nullified the more serious charges.
The three officers fired 25 shots at a moving car near a crowd leaving a high school football game. A total of four people were shot that night, including Bility.
The attorney of Fanta Bility's family, Bruce Castor, condemned the actions of the officers. "Firing into a constantly changing background of people is reckless conduct". He shared that each officer could receive a sentence of 20 years in prison.
Their sentencing will begin on January 12th, 2023.
Though they're satisfied with the officers' guilty pleas, nothing will ever resolve the loss and grief that Fanta Bility's family feels after her tragic death.
"We're still dealing with this every single day," said Fanta's cousin Sadiq Kamara. "So this is just another step in getting justice for Fanta."
