As Republican members of Congress spoke out against gun control, the father of a Parkland, Florida, shooting victim was arrested on Capitol Hill.
Manuel Oliver, whose 17-year-old son Joaquin was fatally shot by a gunman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018, joined his wife Patricia and other gun control activists on Capitol Hill Thursday. According to video, two Capitol officers pinned Manual in the hallway after Republican Rep. Pat Fallon requested his wife be removed from the hearing. It is not shown what led up to the altercation.
“Let my husband go,” Patricia tells the officers, according to the video.
In reaction to Manual's arrest, Democratic Florida state Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost, who survived a school shooting, caught the end on video and denounced the Capitol Police and the GOP.
“MANNY IS A HERO. He didn’t deserve this,” wrote Frost. “The Republican Chair of this committee just called him a narcissist. Disgraceful.”
Manuel Oliver, an American citizen who lost his son to gun violence, was attacked while protesting Republican bans on gun control. This is a cruel irony that illustrates how little care government officials take for Americans' safety.
